CANAAN – Two men were arrested by State Police from the New Lebanon barracks following a crime spree that appears to have been committed by two men who were taken into custody in Columbia County.
Jonathan Kimball, 31, and Steven Nance, 46, were both charged with criminal possession of stolen property and grand larceny, both as felonies following the theft of two vehicles and a dog.
Troopers said a tow truck that was stolen in Barnsville, Pennsylvania, ran a red light at the intersection of Routes 22 and 295 in the Town of Canaan at 1:30 in the morning on Tuesday, August 8 and struck a 2008 Chevy Blazer.
Kimball, who was driving, placed the truck it in reverse in an attempt to flee and struck another vehicle that was parked unattended in a parking lot.
Both Kimball and Vance, who was in the vehicle, fled on foot; Nance was located and taken into custody.
A pit bull dog left behind in the tow truck was determined to have been stolen from a person in Montgomery, Alabama.
While investigating the incident, police were notified that another vehicle had been stolen near the scene of the accident and later recovered by Pittsfield, Massachusetts Police.
At about 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, State Police received a report of a person fitting Kimball’s description being seen near Routes 295 and 22. A search, which included troopers, a State Police helicopter and K-9 units from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office located Kimball five hours later as he walked down Route 22.
Troopers are coordinating with law enforcement authorities in Alabama, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New York as they investigate this crime spree.
Both were sent to the Columbia County Jail. Bail was set at $10,000 cash or $20,000 bond for Nance and $10,000 cash or $25,000 bond for Kimball.
