POUGHKEEPSIE – Dutchess County legislators will discuss term limits in committee this evening and if approved by the full body, they would apply to the legislature, county executive and county comptroller.
In each case, a maximum of 12 consecutive years in office would be allowed.
Bill sponsor, Republican Marc Coviello of Poughquag, is concerned about a potential outcome if a majority of lawmakers do not want to limit their tenures.
“In order to avoid yes or no, what the legislature can do is table the resolution so they are not forced to pass it, but they are not forced to put a ‘no’ vote record against term limits on their records,” he said.
Coviello campaigned on a platform of term limits. He defeated fellow Republican Jerry Hutchings, who served for 14 years.
