WAWAYANDA – Orange County Legislator Jeffrey Berkman, a Middletown Democrat, is urging state officials to conduct further studies into potential environmental effects of the CPV power plant before it is given the approval to begin operations in Wawayanda.
Berkman is concerned with how the process “is rapidly moving forward without clarity” on several issues.
“Significantly, there have been a lot of people talking about air quality problems and groundwater degradation,” he said. “It is my hope that the New York State Health commissioner will review, analyze and investigate the new scientific data and the information and I think that is in the public interest.”
Berkman also said in light of reports of possible misconduct by officials involved with the CPV project, the state attorney general should review, analyze and investigate instances of possible misconduct, improper lobbying and questionable activities that have been alleged.
The lawmaker does acknowledge the need for reliable sources of electric power that are not dependent on foreign governments.
