MIDDLETOWN – Police Lt. John Ewanciw, the Middletown Police Department’s
bureau commander of operations, has been named the new police chief by
the city’s police commission.

Ewanciw, a 17-year veteran of the force, will replace the retiring Ramon
Bethencourt, who will step down of July 31 after 25 years of service.

Ewanciw transferred to Middletown from the Orange County Sheriff’s
Office Corrections Division.

During his tenure in Middletown, he has held the positions of police officer,
patrol sergeant, narcotics sergeant and his current bureau position.

Ewanciw holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Columbia
Southern University and is a graduate of the 251st session of the FBI
National Academy.

He will be sworn in tonight at a special meeting of the Middletown Common
Council.
