Damage inside the old church

NEWBURGH – The stately Dutch Reform Church on Grand Street in Newburgh is rapidly deteriorating and city officials want to save it before it falls into a total state of disrepair.
To that end, a committee is going to ask the city council to approve an agreement with New York City developer Alembic Community Development to begin the process to save the structure, said City Economic Development Director Deidre Glenn.
“They have assured us they have the ability to stabilize it and go in right away before the winter; they have been looking at it since November,” Glenn said.
City officials have bundled the Dutch Reform Church with the shell of the former City Club building and a third building at 2 Montgomery Street, in hopes of finding a developer to restore all of them.
It is the city’s hope to create residential, commercial and community space in the three facilities.
