TOWN OF CHESTER – Conversion of the former Chester Ambulance Corps. building to a new police station is half way toward completion and now the town is going to begin construction on a senior center.
The police station, on Laroe Road, is being funded by a $1.85 million bond.
The senior center, to be located in the Chester Common Park, will be covered by a $1.9 million bond. Currently, the seniors meet in the basement of the library, which is not the most conducive setting, said Town Supervisor Alex Jamieson.
“For a small town population-wise we have a large constituency of seniors; we have we a senior group that meets every Wednesday and at their weekly meetings, they get between 150 and 175 seniors,” Jamieson said. “The basement of the library has not been the most ideal place for organizations including the seniors, to meet.”
That basement has mildew and problems with dampness, Jamieson said.
Last year, town residents turned down a referendum to purchase a recreation facility for $3.3 million.
