WAWAYANDA – A group called the Infrastructure Committee of Sustainable Warwick along with several individuals are going to contribute to pay the fine and court fees of the Wawayanda Six, the individuals who were convicted of disorderly conduct – obstructing traffic when they blocked the entrance to the CPV power plant in December 2015. Each was fined $250 plus court fees of $125.
Two of the six, actor James Cromwell of Cornwall and Pramilla Malick, have vowed to serve jail time rather than pay the fines. The other four – Terri Klemm, Naomi Miller, Madeline Shaw and Maureen Murphy Smolka, will be paying their finds today.
“We believe this verdict is wrong, but we are enormously heartened at the outpouring of support for our actions demonstrated by the many people who have stepped forward to contribute to these fines,” said Klemm.
The natural gas-powered electric generating plant is being constructed between Route 6 and I-84 in the Town of Wawayanda. Opponents say it will pollute the environment and should not have been built. They are also concerned about the approval process, believing it was rushed through.
