PORT JERVIS – Mayor Kelly Decker admits it is a long shot, but he is entering the City of Port Jervis in the $10 million sweepstakes for the only Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant to be awarded in the Hudson Valley for this year.
Last year the City of Middletown, just 19 miles away, won the sole $10 million grant for the region.
Decker said despite the odds, his city is entering the race.
“Although that it would be far stretch that they would give Port Jervis $10 million after they gave Middletown $10 million last year, we have to be in it to win it, as the lottery says,” the mayor noted.
One municipality in each region of the state will receive the $10 million prize to redevelop its downtown.
The Port Jervis Common Council Monday night authorized the mayor to file the application.
