CHATHAM – A Valatie man who was swimming with friends drowned in the Stoney Kill Creek in Chatham late Sunday afternoon. The area where the incident occurred is posted for no swimming.
Brett Cappelli, 19, was observed by witnesses going under and not resurfacing.
Dive teams from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, Hudson Fire Department and Greenport Rescue Squad responded to the scene. The body was recovered at about 5:50 p.m. in 15 feet of water.
An autopsy was scheduled.
Also assisting at the scene were Chatham Fire Department, Chatham Rescue Squad, Niverville Fire Department Swift Water Rescue Team, Columbia County fire coordinators and EMS coordinator and State Police.
