NEWBURGH – Leadership of the Newburgh auxiliary police say they want proper equipment and training before they continue serving the city and to police department officer-in-charge Lt. Joseph Cortez, means the auxiliary officers have resigned.
Cortez told the city council Thursday evening that initial investigation revealed some irregularities in the way the auxiliary operations were being conducted.
“There was definitely some oversight that was lacking with the auxiliary, purchases made without authorization, details done without authorization, out of city incidents without authorization,” he said.
The police department, being run as a paramilitary organization, must follow rules of leadership, and that goes for the auxiliary as well, Cortez said.
“We need them to come back,” said Councilwoman Hillary Rayford.
