MIDDLETOWN – It has become common practice for municipalities to send text messages to residents when the need arises to get the word out in a timely fashion and now Middletown Mayor Joseph DeStefano would like the common council to authorize setting up the system.
The mayor said it is a much faster and more convenience means of alerting the public than just posting online.
“There is technology out there that we can purchase where people can sign up so if there is a street closure, we can send them a text message, instant notifications rather than have people go to the website. It’s not convenience,” he said.
DeStefano would also like the council to consider issuing identification cards to city residents.
“We have a tiered payment system in our city for city residents to get benefits.  Not everybody has ID cards to identify themselves as city residents.”
The common council will consider both proposals, initially in committee.
