MONTGOMERY – If you travel on Interstate 84 in the Mid-Hudson and see new overhead poles across the highway with cylindrical devices pointing in your direction, you may have wondered what they are.  Some speculated that they were speed radar devices while others thought they were license plate readers.
Well, the mystery has been solved. The devices are part of a test program for a commercial vehicle inspection system.
The state Department of Transportation is installing the units along the superhighway.
“It combines weight detecting sensors in the road with cameras on the overpass or mounted to poles,” said DOT spokeswoman Gina DiSarro. “If a vehicle is overweight, the camera will snap a picture of the vehicle’s license plate.”
DiSarro said the system is still in its testing phase, “but it’s expected to improve highway safety and make it easier to check commercial vehicles for compliance.”
