NEW YORK – The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is prepared to accommodate the nearly six million people who will travel by air, car or rail during the Memorial Day weekend.
Agency officials said they have taken proactive measures to ensure travelers have a safe and customer-friendly experience while using their facilities.
Following this week’s terrorist attack in Manchester, England, the Port Authority Police Department has stepped up security at all of its facilities throughout the weekend.
Stewart Airport, one of the Port’s airports, is protected by the State Police.
From Friday through next Tuesday, the agency expects more than 1.8 million passengers to use its aviation facilities, a 1.4 percent increase over last year.
An estimated 839,000 passengers are expected to travel through John F. Kennedy International; some 576,000 are expected to travel through Newark Liberty; an estimated 384,000 are anticipated to travel through LaGuardia and a projected 3,200 are expected to travel through Stewart International.
Nationwide, the AAA is predicting perhaps the busiest Memorial Day weekends on roadways in a decade.
