KINGSTON – The 42-year-old Saugerties man who murdered his girlfriend
on May 31, 2016 was sentenced Wednesday to 24 years to life in state prison.

Karon Bowden, formerly of Brooklyn, shot Amy Louise Burger, 24, to death
in what Ulster County District Attorney Holley Carnright characterized
as a classic case of domestic violence.

“There had been some domestic violence and disharmony in the household.
He was 42. He had been dating her quite a while. She was 24. She had moved
on. She had decided she wanted to end the relationship and rather than
allow her to leave the relationship, he killed her,” the DA said.
Bowden pled guilty to shooting Burger in the head, thus avoiding the
need for a trial; the family was hoping to avoid one because of the “trauma
and public spectacle” it would bring.

At sentencing on Tuesday, the victim’s mother spoke of her daughter’s
success and called her a “rising star.”
