MONTICELLO – A 25-year-old man will be spending the next 25 years
in state prison following his sentencing in a murder case.

Carlos Serrano, also known as Jay Menor Serrano, was sentenced to 25 years
to life in prison by Sullivan County Supreme Court Justice Stephan Schick
in connection with the shooting death of Juan Medina, 28, of Brooklyn
at 62 Park Avenue in Monticello on the evening of June 28, 2016.

Sullivan County District Attorney James Farrell, who tried the case, said
Serrano shot the victim three times. “Serrano wanted to make sure
he killed his victim, and he did not care who he killed or hurt in the
process when he opened fire on a porch where three other people were present,
including an eight-year-old child,” Farrell said.

In his last act before he died, Farrell said Medina got the child into
the arms of her mother and out of the line of gunfire.”

Serrano was taken into custody about three hours after the homicide at
Sleepy Hollow by Monticello Police after an investigation aided by the
DA’s Office and State Police.
