MONTICELLO – A Pine Bush man was arrested on Wednesday by Sullivan County Sheriff’s deputies for allegedly applying for several non-driver’s license IDs under different names and dates of birth.
Deputies were called to the motor vehicle office at the county government center when state DMV Investigator Jeffrey Whelan advised that a customer at the office had attempted to file for a restricted driver’s license due to an insurance lapse. When the transaction was run, it was determined Amiel Maerling, 52, was involved in the other incidents.
To date, the facial recognition program resulted in over 3,800 arrests statewide. “New York is on the forefront of utilizing this type of technology,” said Sullivan Sheriff Michael Schiff. “It greatly enhances law enforcement’s ability to detect and prosecute those committing fraud.
Maerling was charged with offering a false instrument for filing and falsifying business records, both as felonies. He was sent to the Sullivan County Jail in lieu of $15,000 bail.
