NEW PALTZ – Jessica Guerrero is excited almost beyond words to have her husband, Joel, back in their New Paltz home after he was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement for almost three months.
“Oh, my gosh, we are beyond thrilled,” she told Mid-Hudson News on Thursday.
Joel, a native of the Dominican Republic who immigrated here legally some 20 years ago, was detained over a 10-year-old misdemeanor marijuana charge.
Mrs. Guerrero, who is expecting their first child on June 1, is hopeful their problems are over.
“There are obviously no guarantees, but based on the way things are going, it is looking positive that he is not in jeopardy of being deported, but it’s not until the case is closed that we can say with 100 percent,” she said.
Joel’s release from detention was sudden and caught the couple by surprise.
