YORKTOWN – An elderly
man was killed when the car he was driving ran off the Taconic State Parkway
and struck a median guiderail.

State Police identified the victim of the Sunday evening crash as William
Smith, 71, of Hopewell Junction.

Troopers said Smith was driving northbound on the parkway in Yorktown
at around 7:40 p.m. when his car ran off the road and struck the guiderail.
The vehicle then crossed all three northbound lanes and came to rest against
the guiderail on the eastern shoulder.

Smith was transported to Hudson Valley Hospital where he was pronounced
dead.

A preliminary investigation indicates that Smith may have suffered a medical
event prior to his vehicle leaving the road, police said. The cause of
death is pending an autopsy and toxicology.
