PORT JERVIS – City Police in Port Jervis will be participating in expanded traffic safety enforcement in conjunction with the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau in an effort to reduce auto accidents and injuries to pedestrians resulting from incidents on city streets.
Police Chief William Worden said the department will participate in the annual National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Click It or Ticket” border to border campaign from May 22 through June 4. Officers will conduct expanded seat belt enforcement by increasing the amount of patrols and traffic safety checkpoints targeting those violations.
Local police will also participate in the statewide “See! Be Seen!” educational enforcement campaign scheduled between June 16 and 30 where officers will provide education and outreach to increase pedestrian safety awareness and enforce state laws.
In 2016, Worden said his department investigated 328 property damage auto accidents, 36 personal injury accidents and eight incidents where a pedestrian was struck by a motor vehicle. Computer records show that auto accidents occur disproportionately during Tuesdays, Fridays, Mondays and Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. The peak time period is between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. with the majority of accidents occurring on East and West Main Street, Pike Street, Jersey Avenue, Kingston Avenue and Sussex Street.
