Newburgh teen arrested on drug, gun and assault charges

NEWBURGH – Members of the new Non-Fatal Shooting Task Force in Newburgh arrested a 17-year-old Newburgh resident, who was wanted on a felony warrant issued by Orange County Court last November.
Syed Abdul-Khabir was found in possession of drugs. A search of his residence a 142 West Parmenter Street yielded some 232 glassine envelopes of suspected heroin and a loaded .357 revolver that had been reported stolen in 2007 from Marshalls Creek in Monroe County, Pennsylvania.
Abdul-Khabir was arrested without incident. He was later charged for the February 2 shooting that wounded a taxi driver in his parked in his vehicle in the area of 168 Broadway.  He was charged with criminal use of a firearm, possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment, assault, possession of a controlled substance, possession of stolen property, and possession of a weapon.
The new task force, funded through a grant, is comprised of a Newburgh city detective and an Orange County District Attorney investigator, along with members of the US Marshals Fugitive Task Force.
