NEWBURGH – North Korean’s threat of developing a nuclear weapon capable of reaching the United States home front has created “a very dangerous situation,” Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney (D, NY18) said on Thursday. He is just back from a fact-finding mission to South Korea and Japan.
Maloney, who met with political and military leaders in South Korea and Japan, said the nuclear threat creates a “clear and present danger” to the US. “We are not prepared to sit back and let North Korea threaten our homeland,” he said.
Visiting the Korean Peninsula gave more clarity to the situation, said Maloney.
“When you go to the DMZ and you are standing on the edge of North Korea and you listen to the people who guard that line for freedom, you don’t come away with anything but respect for the mission they have to perform and also the complexity of this problem, but at the end of the day, this is about whether we want to live under the threat of nuclear attack by the North Korean regime here in the United States, here in the continental US,” he said.
Maloney said there is no other situation in the world today that poses a greater threat than a potential conflict in the Korean Peninsula.
