NEW PALTZ – The Excelsior
Scholarship program adopted as part of the state budget will provide free
tuition at SUNY and CUNY schools for middle class families that meet financial
requirements.
The new plan is “a step in the right direction,” SUNY New Paltz President Donald Christian told the College Council on Monday.
“The announcement of this came at a time that we are recruiting students and students are making choices sometimes between our campus and private colleges and private colleges or campuses in other states, so we are keeping a close eye on whether the Excelsior Scholarship program will increase our yield and help our enrollments,” Christian said.
Students who receive the scholarships must commit to seeking employment in New York.
