NEWBURGH – The police department in the City of Newburgh continues to face the problem of officer retention.
Often new patrol members are trained at city expense only for them to
take jobs elsewhere and City Manager Michael Ciaravino told the city council
Thursday night that is an ongoing challenge.
“The very police officers who know the streets, who have grown up, attended NFA, know the neighborhoods, know the people, those are the people that we prize and we value and we are losing them to other communities once we have invested all the time, all the training, and frankly the Newburgh Police Department’s credential s behind them,” Ciaravino said. “That is something we see as a long-term challenge. Another challenge is the retention of leadership at the very top.”
With the departure of former Chief Daniel Cameron, Lt. Richard Carion has been named lieutenant in charge, until a new chief is picked following a civil service exam.
