TOWN OF WALLKILL – The Town of Wallkill Public Works Department,
headed by Commissioner Louis Ingrassia, Jr., has been presented with a
Gold Shovel Standard award for participating in the Dig Safely New York
Certified Excavator Program in Safe Digging Practices.

Officials of Dig Safely New York and Orange and Rockland Utilities, a
member of the Gold Shovel Standard program, were on hand Tuesday with
DPW workers and town officials.

Whether there is going to be digging by a commercial business or private
resident, they are urged to call 811 to report the location before digging.
Dig Safely New York will look it up and mark where underground utilities
are located.

Agency Executive Director Kevin Hopper said it is of utmost importance
to call 811 before digging.

“A Dig Safely New York we look at damage prevention as a shared
responsibility and the commitment of the town, the utility – Orange
and Rockland – and all of the stakeholders participating in making
sure that we are doing the right thing when we are out there is very important,”
he said.

Ingrassia said the town adopted the safety training standard for all workers
“to empower them to be equipped with the knowledge of safe digging
procedures that are both required by law and expected as recommended best
practices. We feel that by enhancing our training and education, we are
optimizing damage prevention, safety in the field, and productivity.”
