GOSHEN – A woman, who stole close to $1.4 million from her Village of Florida employer, was sentenced in Orange County Court on Wednesday to state prison.
Donna Ortiz, who was an office manager, admitted in Judge Robert Freehill’s court that she embezzled the money between July 1, 2009 and December 31, 2015 by diverting money into her own bank accounts.
Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler said this was the largest theft from an employer in the county in recent years.
“She had the trust of her employer and she abused it and took measures to fulfill the embezzlement and she did it very well and she pled guilty to grand larceny,” Hoovler said.  “We had recommended that she receive four to 12 years in state prison and the judge sentenced her to three to nine.”
The theft not only hurt the company, but prevented it from hiring others and making additional charitable contributions which would have benefited the entire community, the owner of the company said during sentencing.
