KINGSTON – Ulster County Executive Michael Hein has proposed legislation to allow spouses of veterans to be buried at the county Veterans Cemetery in New Paltz.
Hein said it makes sense to allow a spouse to join their husband or wife in their final resting place.
“Not only do our veterans make enormous sacrifices; we owe them a debt that we could never possibly repay, but their families also make extraordinary sacrifices,” Hein said. “When a veteran passes in Ulster County they have the right to be buried in the Ulster County Veterans Cemetery and now with this legislation we are going to make sure their loved ones also have the ability to be buried side by side with them.”
And if the family of a spouse does not have the financial means to cover the associated costs, the county would take care of them just as it does now for veterans.
The Ulster County Veterans Cemetery is located in the New Paltz Rural Cemetery.
The county legislature must approve the policy change, which is not expected to meet much, if any, opposition.
