NEWBURGH – After weeks of discussion between Newburgh City Council members and the public, local lawmakers approved a tenant responsibility law. The measure was recommended by the Newburgh Landlords’ Association.
Before the vote Monday night, Councilwoman Karen Mejia unsuccessfully attempted to modify the law.
“I want to add from the floor that we add also owners’ and tenants’ responsibility,” she told colleagues. “I would feel so much more comfortable if we have something that reaches out to the responsibilities that the owners actually do have.”
Mejia’s proposal didn’t even get a second. Councilman Torrance Harvey told Mejia that she had ample time to bring up the proposal at previous sessions and that the law could always be amended in the future.
Mejia’s final comment on the subject, which brought applause from residents
in the audience, was that renters should form a tenants’ association.
