NEW PALTZ – The mumps outbreak that plagued the SUNY New Paltz campus last year appears to be “turning the corner,” according to College President Dr. Donald Christian.
He said only one case was confirmed during the spring semester, compared to a larger number last year.
“In December, we reached what the health departments call ‘an attack rate threshold’ of five cases per 1,000, which for a campus of our size is roughly 40 cases and when that happens, they recommend an inoculation clinic to have young people get a third vaccination,” he said.
On December 13 and 14 of last year, Christian said the college vaccinated some 1,500 students.
Last year’s outbreak was manifested among members of the swim team
and some dormitory residents.
