PIERMONT – Cleanup of the former Piermont Papermills site at 100 Paradise Avenue in Piermont will begin this spring under the state’s Superfund Program. Rockland County will perform the work with oversight by the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
Up to 280 cubic yards of PCB contaminated soil will be removed from nine previously identified areas on the 1.3-acre site that operated as a paper mill from 1902 to 1984. The area will be back-filled with clean soil.
A spill of PCB contaminated oil occurred, the DEC said, likely during removal of transformers during building demolition. A former solvent room was found to be an area of contamination. That area was previously cleaned up.
The majority of the site comprises the sole entrance to the adjacent condominiums.
