CRONOMER VALLEY – A Newburgh
Town Police officer, who narrowly escaped injury last October when the
patrol car in which he was riding exploded, sustained injury on Sunday
afternoon when his police vehicle ran off Gardnertown Road and struck
a tree.

Patrolman Taso Karabelas was kept overnight at St. Luke’s Cornwall
Hospital in Newburgh, said Town Supervisor Gilbert Piaquadio, who said
the officer had some glass in his hand from the accident.

The cause of Sunday’s accident is unknown.

It was on October 18, 2016 that he was driving another patrol car and
smelled smoke. He jumped out just before an oxygen tank in the trunk exploded.

Karabelas is also credited with pulling a woman out of her vehicle after
it crashed into a stream. He rescued her before she even got wet, Piaquadio
recalled.
