NEWBURGH – As the state departments of Health and Environmental Conservation continue to test Newburgh area residents on a voluntary basis for the detection of the chemical PFOS in their blood, a fourth location has been announced for that purpose.
The concern about the chemical in residents’ blood streams stems from the contamination of Newburgh’s main water supply, Lake Washington. That was found last year to contain high levels of the carcinogenic chemical, believed to emanate from the nearby Stewart Air National Guard Base. Chemical firefighting foam contains PFOS.
The state Health Department on Thursday said a fourth site, BioReference, at 147 Lake Street, is now available for the free blood testing.
The lab joins St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital, Quest Diagnostics and LabCorp in providing the free service to the community.
Residents who want to participate in the blood testing program can do so by calling 800-801-8092 to request a lab order. Once they receive that, they can take it to one of the participating community sites to have their blood drawn.
The St. Luke’s lab is located at the hospital at 70 Dubois Street; Quest Diagnostics is located at 347 Fullerton Avenue; LabCorp is located at 5 Hudson Valley Professional Plaza.
