WHITE PLAINS – Former Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department treasurer Michael Klein pled guilty in federal court to wire fraud, subscription to false tax returns, obstruction of the grand jury and false statement charges in connection with his embezzlement of over $5.6 million.
Klein, 48, of Mahopac, stole the money by writing some 275 checks over a period of more than 13 years using the money to purchase, among other things, a 55-foot Neptunus motor yacht named “KBam,” a second home in Palm City, Florida, an antique fire truck, and jewelry. He also used money to support two businesses he owned.  Klein also failed to report most of the income on his personal tax returns from 2009 through 2014, resulting in the false tax return charges.
When sentenced in June, he faces up to 20 years in prison and must forfeit over $5.6 million.
