CARMEL – A senior investigator in the Putnam County Sheriff’s
Office, Mark Gilmore, died suddenly on Wednesday, March 1, Sheriff Donald
Smith announced on Thursday.

Gilmore was 54.

Smith said Gilmore was off duty and exercising at a gym in Dutchess County
Wednesday evening when he collapsed from an apparent heart attack.

He was rushed by ambulance to Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie,
where he died. An official cause of death has not yet been announced.

Gilmore served in the sheriff’s office for more than 28 years, serving
as a corrections officer, deputy sheriff, sergeant, and most recently,
as the senior investigator in charge of the Narcotics Enforcement Unit.
He was a member of the Emergency Response Team and was a motorcycle
officer, and was the recipient of several letters of commendation and
unit citations during his career.

Gilmore had served in the Army Reserve.

Smith called Gilmore “a consummate professional [who] as head of
the Narcotics Unit… worked hard every day at trying to keep dangerous
drugs away from our most precious resources – our children and young
adults.”

He is survived by his wife, Amy, and daughter, Mattingly, father and step-mother.
