Nine area companies responded to the scene

CARMEL – Fire that broke out just after midnight Wednesday lit up the nighttime skies over the Kent-Carmel area as flames destroyed a large, two-story house at 22 Westleigh Court.
An elderly couple escaped with just the night clothes on their backs. They were not injured.
Flames shot 100 feet into the air as the wood-frame structure was destroyed.  Firefighters had to truck in water as there were no hydrants in the area.
The cause is under investigation by the Putnam Fire Investigation team and the Bureau of Emergency Services although it is not believed to be suspicious.
Assisting in the firefighting operations were firefighters from Carmel, Lake Carmel, Brewster, Kent, Patterson, Mahopac, Mahopac Falls, Putnam Lake and Putnam Valley.
