NEW WINDSOR – Stewart Airport and Airport Commission officials have been lobbying the Port Authority Board to free up the $20 million that was originally targeted for the airport’s international arrivals addition, but was later pulled from the more than $32 billion authority capital budget.
Authority Executive Director Patrick Foye was at the Newburgh airport on Thursday to welcome Norwegian Air, which will start flights to Europe this summer. He said there is some money in place already.
“I think that Norwegian’s commencement of service is an incredibly positive thing for Orange County, for the state, for the Port Authority, and most importantly, for Stewart Airport and employment here,” Foye said. “The funds for the design of the federal inspection area are in place. The design is going to start. We have been working very closely with Customs and Border Protection and TSA and we are incredibly excited and don’t see any barriers to making the investment here that needs to be done for Norwegian to thrive.”
When asked by Mid-Hudson News if that means the $20 million needed for construction of the facility would be approved, Foye said, “absolutely.”
In the meantime, there is a federally approved movable wall in place to separate domestic and international passengers.
