TOWN OF WALLKILL – The rebuilding of the Crestwood Apartments on Fitzgerald Drive in the Town of Wallkill is expected to begin by the warmer weather.
An early morning fire on January 24 damaged 15 apartments and injured five people. Dozens of others were evacuated from neighboring apartment buildings in the complex.
Town Supervisor Daniel Depew said on Wednesday that the owners of the multi-unit housing have come to terms with the insurance carrier and will now begin the redesign process.
“We are going to call together a meeting of our building inspection officials here in the town and our town architect that reviews these buildings to see what aspects of the new code are going to be applicable t the building so they can get going,” Depew said. “They are hoping that by this spring begin work on this building.”
The cause of the fire was initially thought to be careless smoking.
