MONTICELLO – A Liberty man was sentenced in Sullivan County Court on Thursday to 25 years in prison and five years of post-release supervision after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the death of his wife.
Jorge Gonzalez, 66, admitted he shot and killed Ramona Gonzalez, 30, in a wooded area in the Town of Fallsburg on February 4, 2016.
Village of Liberty Police had been called to investigate the disappearance of Mrs. Gonzalez after she was reported missing by her children on February 5, 2016.
Investigators located her body after Gonzalez led them to it. An autopsy determined she had been shot to death.
“This case is another case of domestic violence that resulted in the ultimate act of violence – homicide, and should serve as a reminder of the serious danger that domestic violence poses and why our society needs to treat domestic violence as the serious crime that it is,” said Sullivan County District Attorney James Farrell. He noted her husband will now likely spend the rest of his life in prison.
The case was investigated by Liberty Village Police, State Police, Town of Fallsburg Police and the District Attorney’s Office.
