NEW PALTZ – A New Paltz man has been committed to the Ulster County Jail after he was caught inside an out-of-business diner in the Town of New Paltz.
A local officer on patrol just before 9 a.m. on February 8 spotted a suspicious vehicle parked in front of the building. As the officer approached the front door of the diner, he saw a man inside the foyer area turn and run back into the building.  Responding officers made entry into the business through an unsecured window and found Doyle Gosney, 49, hiding in the basement.
Police said he was stealing items and putting them in his vehicle before police arrived. For that he was charged with felony burglary.
Gosney was also charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and operating a motor vehicle without an ignition interlock device.
The two vehicle-related charges stem from Gosney driving to the diner with a revoked driver’s license due to a previous DWI conviction.
Gosney is in the Dutchess County jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond.
New Paltz Police were assisted by a State Police K-9 Unit at the scene.
