TOWN OF WALLKILL – Residents
of the apartment building that burned early Tuesday morning in the Town
of Wallkill may recoup their deposits from the landlord.
More than a dozen units burned leaving the residents homeless. Town Supervisor Daniel Depew felt those individual would need that money in order to find temporary housing.
A structural engineer was on-site on Wednesday. Depew said the building
appears to be salvageable.
“I think there is going to be a rehab of the building at this point,” he said. “One of the questions is going to be looking at today’s code and determining how much of today’s code is going to be applicable to the building. We didn’t have any problems with the structure of the building even under the older code. Everything was compliant, but it is always difficult when you are retrofitting old with new and also trying to make the code coherent with that retrofit.”
Residents of that building at the Crestwood Apartments whose homes were
not heavily damaged may contact the management company and be escorted
in to remove valuables, Depew said.
