MONTICELLO – A Brooklyn man, who is on parole for a previous robbery, has been arrested while armed with a 12-inch knife for allegedly robbing a woman as she warmed up her car in a Monticello parking lot.
Michael Edward Murray, 23, was arrested on Friday and charged with felonies of armed robbery and criminal possession of a weapon and a misdemeanor of criminal possession of stolen property.
Monticello Police were called to a report of a dispute in the area of the basketball courts at the Monticello Housing Authority at Evergreen Drive. As K-9 Officer Matthew Rohner was checking the complex, there was a report of a man armed with what appeared to be a machete, walking around the complex.
The officer spotted Murray in a side parking lot standing next to a vehicle with its door open. He was holding a 38-year-old female resident of the complex at knifepoint and robbing her of money and jewelry.
Rohner got out of his patrol car, drew his gun and ordered Murray to drop the knife. He did not immediately comply so the officer ordered him again to drop the knife or he would release his K-9.
Murray dropped the weapon at that point and with the assistance another officer, took Murray into custody.
The victim told officers she was warming up her car when Murray, who she did not know, approached her with the knife and demanded her money and jewelry. She was shaken but not injured.
Murray was sent to the Sullivan County Jail without bail.
