BREWSTER – The initial phase of construction for a transit-oriented development project in the Village of Brewster near the Metro-North train station is about to begin.
Top Putnam County and Brewster officials announced on Thursday that 500 apartments, retail space and 400 more parking spaces are all part of the projects to be constructed by Covington Development.
County Executive MaryEllen Odell said that type of construction near train stations has worked in other locations.
“I could point to Jersey City and Hoboken as a place of success where you revitalize the area, you rebuild the infrastructure, you bring retail, you bring residential and with that comes the millennials and all of their trillion dollars of projected spending money,” Ocell said. “And you look at Peekskill, our neighbors to the south and the successes that have been had by identifying these transit-oriented development projects as being important to good, smart economic growth.”
The Brewster project is the beneficiary of $2 million from the state.
Mayor James Schoenig said as a result of the transit-oriented project, the village will become “a thriving social and economic hub of the Harlem Valley once again.”
