NEWBURGH – Three men, all members of the Newburgh City Fire Department, have signed up to take the department’s chief exam to be administered by the city Civil Service Commission on Saturday, January 7.
The exam is a promotional test.
According to civil service law, a mandatory candidate list must include
at least three people and the appointing person must choose from among
the top three test scorers. If there are less than three who pass the
test, the list is not considered valid and the appointing individual may
name someone else provisionally.
That means that all three of those taking this Saturday’s exam
must receive passing grades for the list to be mandatory..
Currently, Assistant Chief Terry Ahlers is acting chief as appointed months ago by City Manager Michael Ciaravino. Ahlers would like to stay in the top post, but does not want to move into the city as required. But, if all three test-takers do not pass the exam, Ciaravino could keep Ahlers on the job for a longer period of time until another civil service exam is given for the chief’s post.
