Man steals tow truck, leads police on two-state chase

HILLBURN – A Woodridge, New Jersey man led police from New Jersey and New York and a chase from East Rutherford to Harriman before he was stopped driving the stolen flatbed tow truck in Hillburn on Monday.
Paul Gudanowski, 50, allegedly stole the vehicle in East Rutherford, New Jersey. He fled up Route 17 and entered the New York State Thruway at exit 15A in Suffern until he reached Harriman, making an illegal U-turn, continuing southbound, intentionally striking two State Police cars disabling both.
Gudanowski left the Thruway at exit 15A and traveling onto Route 17 where he struck an East Rutherford Police car.
He was taken into custody on Route 59 in Hillburn and charged with criminal
possession of a stolen vehicle, criminal mischief, assault, unlawful fleeing,
DWI, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, and several vehicle and
traffic violations.
He was arraigned in Monroe Town Court and remanded to the Orange County
Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or $150,000 bond.
Both troopers in vehicles he struck sustained minor injuries and were treated and released from the hospital. The East Rutherford officer was not injured.
