POUGHKEEPSIE – Now that the Poughkeepsie city budget for next year has been finalized with city funding for only the first half of 2017 for its bus system, Mayor Robert Rolison this week began discussions with Dutchess County about the county taking over the city buses.
The mayor said a committee will be formed to develop the next steps in the process. Rolison said he knows what city residents need.
“We want to maintain as much of the integrity and routes as are necessary especially when it comes to the routes that the people have spoken about quite vocally both in council meetings and one of the transit meetings we had,” the mayor said. “We will take all of those comments and ideas and put them into a working document and work with the council to get it approved.”
County officials have said they would work with the city to ensure that bus service is not diminished with a takeover.
Poughkeepsie residents have been very vocal in their opposition to losing the city-operated bus service.
