MONTICELLO – A 26-year-old Monticello man was sentenced Wednesday
by Sullivan County Court Judge Stephan Schick to 15 years in prison and
five years of post-release supervision for the robbery of another man
with what appeared to be a handgun.

The crime took place in January at Shaker Heights Apartments in Monticello.

Frank Drayton was convicted in a jury trial in July for the crimes of
two counts of robbery, two counts of conspiracy, all as felonies, and
misdemeanors of resisting arrest and criminal possession of stolen property.

Drayton was sentenced as a second felony offender having been convicted
in Sullivan County Court in June 2015 on felony drug sales. He was on
parole at the time.

The jury in the recent case found Drayton, acting together with four other
men, violently robbed an individual inside the Shaker Heights complex
at about 10:40 p.m. on January 7.

During the robbery, Drayton displayed what appeared to be a firearm, threatening
the victim with it, while Drayton and one of the others with him went
through the victim’s pockets, stealing cash, a cellular phone and
other items.

It turns out the weapon was a starter pistol. One of the guns brandished
at the victim, though, was discharged during the robbery; no one was hurt.

Chief Assistant District Attorney Meagan Galligan prosecuted the case.
The FBI’s Hudson Valley Safe Streets Task Force, Monticello and
Liberty Village Police Departments assisted in the case and Sullivan County
Sheriff’s deputies apprehended Drayton, who fled the scene.

“This defendant perpetrated a very serious crime by robbing the
victim at gunpoint and has now been held responsible and accountable for
his own crimes with the imposition of the maximum sentence allowed by
the law for this robbery – 15 years in state prison.”
