KINGSTON – Stating that the City of Kingston has no formal existing agreements to enforce immigration policy and is generally considered to be a “sanctuary city,” Mayor Steven Noble has proposed a resolution affirming Kingston as a welcoming and inclusive municipality.
Noble said he has been contacted by a number of different faith groups, community organizations and individuals who have “expressed a sense of fear and concern for the safety of our fellow community members” and as a result, his proposal “responds to the issues raised and respects our laws and policies.”
The memorializing resolution is modeled after those in Burlington and
Montpelier, Vermont.
It seeks to demonstrate that Kingston is an inclusive city that respects and upholds basic human and civil rights of all individuals. Noble said it does not supersede existing local, state and federal laws.
