NEW CITY – A 17-year-old Spring Valley resident is expected to
be sentenced to 16 years in state prison when he returns to court on March
14, 2017. Jiwan Coleman pled guilty Thursday to manslaughter in the death
of Ruben Suchite Torres on July 2.

At around 11:40 p.m. on June 26, the victim was walking from the Spring
Valle Transit Center to his North Myrtle Avenue home after leaving work.

Coleman followed him until he struck Torres on the back of the head with
a rock and stole his phone and wallet before fleeing.

Spring Valley Police arrested Coleman two days later following an investigation.

Torres was rushed to Westchester Medical Center where he remained in a
coma until his death on July 2.

“The defendant admitted that his violent and unprovoked actions
were solely responsible for the untimely death of an innocent man,”
said District Attorney Thomas Zugibe. “As such, he has proven himself
unfit for society, and the term to be imposed is more than warranted.”

Executive Assistant DA Stephen Moore prosecuted the case.
