TARRYTOWN – Top state officials, Tuesday, were at the site of the new Tappan Zee Bridge, which is under construction, to celebrate the topping off of all eight main towers on the twin span.
The $3.98 billion bridge is on time and on budget, officials said.
Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D, NY17), who secured millions in federal dollars for the project, said the topping off “is a symbol of the incredible work that can be achieved when government truly performs for the people it is meant to serve.”
Governor Andrew Cuomo said the new bridge proves that New York can get things done even when naysayers say it can’t be.
“We remember the confidence that built New York in the first place. Look down the river. Every building, every tunnel, every bridge, bigger and better than the last one,” Cuomo said. “And New York was founded on a confidence where we said we can do it when everybody else said they can’t. And that’s what this bridge stands for.”
The current TZ Bridge carries some 140,000 vehicles daily. It will be
dismantled when the new one is opened in 2018.
