NEWBURGH – The Newburgh City Council put off a contract agreement for the acquisition of ShotSpotter, a cutting edge, best practice, gunshot locator software, through SST Inc. Monday evening.
The approximately $500,000 cost of leasing the software was to be covered through the 2017 Community Development Block Grant.
Some council members, including Torrance Harvey, felt they did not have
enough time to digest the details of the program.
“This is a lot of money and we really got to make an informed decision on this, and look at the cost-benefit analysis of this in a very strategic way,” said Harvey. “It is important, but I would like to take my time with this and really hear the people, the voice of the people and also, again, look at the cost-benefit analysis of this.”
Mayor Judy Kennedy supported the council’s reluctance and said she understands council members wanting to do their due diligence on matter.
“We shouldn’t be voting on anything blindly,” Kennedy said. “That’s not ever a good policy. Even if it sounds good to hear, we should understand the dos and don’ts and whatever for it.”
