Orange County man arrested in Putnam twice in one day

CARMEL – A Fort Montgomery man was arrested twice on Wednesday in Putnam County.
Kyle Hetman, 18, of Fort Montgomery, was stopped in the morning for speeding on Route 9D in the Town of Philipstown and when a Putnam Sheriff’s deputy detected the odor of marijuana emanating from inside the vehicle and spotted evidence of marijuana usage, Hetman was arrested on a charge of unlawful possession of marijuana. He was released pending a future court appearance.
Less than three hours later, Hetman called the sheriff’s office to report a burglary in progress at a residence in Philipstown. Hetman told authorities that earlier that morning, while he acted as the caretaker of the home of a friend. He said he encountered a man inside, who assaulted him then fled into nearby woods.
A number of police agencies responded including deputy sheriffs, State Police, Cold Spring, MTA and Westchester County Police. Police K9s and a police helicopter were dispatched to the scene in an attempt to locate the alleged assailant. No one was found.
Hetman later drove to the sheriff’s office in Carmel to be interviewed further and after being questioned about inconsistencies in his story, he admitted to having made up the incident.
He was charged with falsely reporting an incident and with making a false punishable written statement, both misdemeanors.
Hetman was released pending a future court appearance.  If convicted, he could face up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000 for each charge.
